Candle Care & Safety Guide

There’s something magical about lighting a candle. Whether it’s to cozy up your space, set the mood, or simply enjoy a favorite fragrance. But to get the most out of your candles (and keep things safe), a little care goes a long way. We have put together a candle care and safety guide for you to help you burn candles with precaution, while making sure every glow is as beautiful as the first.

✂️ Before You Light

  • Trim the wick – Always trim your candle wick to about ¼ inch before each burn. This helps prevent tall flames, smoky burns, and unwanted soot.
  • Set it up right – Place your candle on a heat-resistant, flat surface, away from anything flammable, and out of reach of kids and pets.
  • Check the temperature – If your candle has been sitting in a cold spot, let it warm up to room temperature before lighting. This prevents uneven burning or cracks.

🔥 While It Burns

  • Stick to 2–4 hours – Burning for this amount of time lets the wax pool reach the edges of the container, preventing tunneling (that annoying hole down the middle).
  • Don’t overdo it – Never let a candle burn longer than 4 hours at once. Extra-long burns can overheat the container.
  • Keep it clean – Remove any debris (wick trimmings, matches, or dust) from the wax pool so your candle burns smoothly.
  • Avoid drafts – Keep candles away from fans, vents, or open windows. Too much airflow can cause flickering flames or uneven burns.
  • Never walk away – A burning candle should never be left unattended.

🛑 Knowing When to Stop

  • Watch the wax level – Stop burning your candle when about ½ inch of wax remains. Going lower can overheat or damage the container.
  • Look for warning signs – If your candle is flickering wildly, producing excessive smoke, or the container feels too hot, extinguish it immediately and let it cool.

🕯 Container Safety

  • Burn your candle only in the vessel it came in.
  • Avoid placing candles on delicate or heat-sensitive surfaces like wood or fabric.
  • Remember: the container stays hot even after the flame is out—give it time before touching or moving.

🌬 Extinguishing the Right Way

  • Use a snuffer (or carefully dip the wick into melted wax) to put out your candle without splattering.
  • Avoid blowing directly on the flame, as this can scatter hot wax.
  • Let the wax cool and solidify before lighting it again.

⚠ Quick Safety Reminders

  • Never use water to put out a candle—it can cause the hot wax to splatter.
  • Store your candles in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight to keep their fragrance and wax in top shape.
  • Keep candles out of reach from little hands and curious paws.
